after the party, it's the hotel lobby.

it's no secret that r.kelly is a dirty old man. but the beauty of this specific perv, lies in his innuendo-dripped catalogue of hit after hit. check out portland producer, COPY, flip the classic track, "ignition" below. although im still partial to the original "ignition" remix, copy's version still manages to find the beat and keep it bounce, bounce, bounce...

uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

yesterday i was able to catch a final showing of the documentary, jean-michel basquiat: the radiant child, at the nuart off santa monica. admittedly, my knowledge of basquiat was average at best prior to the film, but i walked away thoroughly impressed and sad that yet another artistic soul was lost way before his time. a loving tribute indeed and what a body of work in such a short time.

its limited run is now closed for los angeles, but i highly recommend it when it drops on dvd. check out director tamra davis' talk about her baby below.

we will not destroy you, oh we will not destroy you.

if you were invited to join your favorite band on a cross country tour and filmed only the choice cuts from the stage, the tour bus, the hotel and the personal moments in between, you could only hope it would be as awesomely cohesive as the new video from chillwave outfit, washed out.

from the sweat induced dance parties to the solitary stills from various modes of transportation, it's an accidental tour diary that really captures the beauty and exhilaration of life on the road.

turn the dial on my words, i can feel them fall short.

some of us always feel welcomed there, while others can't even tell you the last time they stepped foot inside. occasionally it offers feelings of comfort or nostalgia, while the remainder of the time, it can fuel memories of polarization. for better or for worse, everyone has a place to call home.

check out aussie duo, bag raiders' take on the issue of home and who exactly helps them to such a destination with the artsy-fartsy clip below.

bag raiders' self-titled debut drops October 1st.

nevermind, i know i do.

forrest gump said it best: shit happens. sometimes when things become ingested, stuff automatically starts to appear, colors become brighter and the next thing you know - shit really is happening.

perhaps half filipino-chillwave pioneer, chaz bundick (better known under the moniker - toro y moi), is speaking from personal experience in the latest clip for my current favorite song, "low shoulder".

whether it's all real or coming from a substance a little more intense, go down the rabbit hole (thanks to an unsuspecting coffee cup) below.

please apply yourself to me sweetly.

occasionally the boat tips over. not everything can float consistently sans waves or accidents. the trick is to have someone on board that not only has an extra life jacket, but is willing to dry themselves off and continue on the voyage.

maneater vs. wild.

sometimes all it takes is someone's birthday to make an idea a reality. pinatas were on the brain last year, but this time around the challenge became individualizing beers, utilizing chalk board spray paint and creating steezy water bottles. the result? let me introduce you to the party animal box.

happy birthday dj high heely! you deserve the world's best day. and special thanks to LFC for helping me out with the design.

cheers for beers,

we need this precious time just to comprehend.

a few months ago, i stumbled upon a promo cd that lured me with its multicolored, tie dye-esque album cover. the band's name was familiar, but their music wasn't. i put the disc in my purse and went on my way.

since then, small black's self-titled EP has been in consistent rotation. lo-fi indie-wave gems, heavy on reverb and emotion - it feels like that solitary 2am drive home after yet another unnecessary fight with your significant other.

small black are set to release their debut full length, new chain, october 26 courtesy of jagjaguwar. check out lead single "photojournalist" HERE.

i've got a cure for your crimes.

some of my favorite memories have been captured via polaroids. my apartment is scattered with dozens of polaroids featuring a rotating cast of friends, ex boyfriends, bottles of whiskey, strangers and homemade creations. while super bummed that film is no longer as easily accessible as it once was, there remains the impossible project.

learn about new versions of colored film and perhaps pick up a pack or two.
and check out this short clip from 1972 and tell me you don't want one of those original SX-70 gangstas.

i'm on a 24 hour, champagne diet.

even just a 45 minute drive from los angeles, can feel like a million miles away. after checking out my favorite dj, nosaj thing, murder his mad decent block party set, i ended up in the beachside town of oxnard.

the events that happened within the last 30 hours were perhaps the most random and hilarious of the summer. it also reminded me, that sometimes a few drinks and dumbshit inside jokes are necessary for a successful adventure.

i'm not weird, i am limited edition.

when i was younger, all i really wanted was a puppy. a super cute, awfully slobbery puppy. my parents never obliged and repeatedly said no without reason. instead they got me a pet parakeet. while it was fun for the first few hours, ultimately having a bird was not a suitable replacement puppy. so then my parents decided...to get me another parakeet. i was stuck with two equally not fun pets, whom i could not tell apart for the life of me. fast forward 15 years and i still don't know what it's like to actually have a four legged friend to call my own.

it's because of such history that allows me to harbor a soft spot for yeasayer's new video, "madder red". i envy veronica mars' love for another non-human. so while it may be creepy for most, the 10 year old kid inside of me kinda yearns.

rest in peace pet blob,

ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space.

despite the fact i know i'll never walk on the moon or float among the cosmos, expansive travel of such interplanetary places can still be achieved whenever i hear the music of yuk.

deeply embedded atmospheres built by throbbing beats and consistent tweaks, it's the most affordable way to explore the universe, or beyond.

yuk.'s debut record, A D W A, is out next week on CASSETTE (bust out the boombox) courtesy of local imprint, leaving records.

chad, you're awesome.

do the astral plane.

two weeks ago i was lucky enough to catch a free performance from the miguel atwood-ferguson ensemble at the california plaza in downtown. featuring cameos from flying lotus, bilal and aloe blacc (among others), it was a beautiful night by a man-made pond with friends, smuggled bottles of wine, mood lighting and a bag of salt and pepper crisps.

color my life with the chaos of trouble.

im all for dynamic duos. there's usually the obvious hero and then the awesomely-necessary sidekick. both parts contingent to one another, feeding off each other's energy and consistently commanding the best from their counterpart.

as for lil wayne and drake, their roles tend to rotate depending on who's starring as the guest or the host. i don't care what anyone says, i love drizzy and there is no denying the sheer magnitude that weezy's wordplay commands per track.

stream their latest collabo, "right above it", off weezy's forthcoming EP, i'm not a human being, which drops on his birthday, 9/27.

keep your heart three stacks, keep your heart.

there's something irresistible about andre 3000. with every 365, mister benjamin has become more flirtatious with his verses, bouncing between future wifey duties, to the occasional one night stand courtesy of a shared cab.

perennially suave and innuendo-heavy , check out his verse on the jeezy track, "i do". and for good measure, his classic verse for UGK's "international players anthem".

there's nothing lovelier than a sunny and optimistic friday afternoon. so go find a patch of grass and watch the wind change your scenery. but most importantly, allow this dublab sprout session by los angeles' latest beat wunderkind, baths, to feed the mood.

we are beautiful, we are doomed.

today i spent my afternoon at the ed emberley & friends exhibit @ the scion space in culver city. as a fan of simple, mid-century nostalgic art - i adored it. and as a personal fan of tigers - it was essential to my thursday viewing pleasure. it's only showing till august 7th, so make haste young turks!

i've got to get it right, i never wanted to fight.

being under the weather is never fun. but when it's a death sweat 90+ degrees outside, misery is even more inevitable. laying in bed is like being spun in a dryer cycle - there's no escape from the heat permeating inside and out.

as i managed to peel myself out of bed today and sit in the rotating shade of this coffeeshop, i feel like this remix of millionYoung's "mien" kinda fits the current state of my illness.

retaining an environment of being out-of-sorts and sluggish, when the bass and synths collide, it matches the pounding in my head and throat.

get well soon,

if it's crowded, all the better. 'cause we know we're gonna be up late.

i feel like ramona from nite jewel and i could be friends. we've got a checklist of similar interests (tape decks, leftover instruments, side swept bangs and a deep love for 90's three letter r&b groups like TLC and SWV). plus she's short and collaborates with some of my favorite acts. the only thing that separates us, is that she's actually got talent. while ive only got the words to describe it.

nite jewel recently dropped their am i real EP, that's now available via stones throw (as if you needed another reason to adore that label). give it a spin below.
