i was lucky enough to see zero dark thirty last month with my brother. i didn't know much about the hunt for osama bin laden or the events that led up to his execution, but i was transfixed for the movie's entire duration at the intensity that transpired on screen. jessica chastain's portrayal of maya is a tidal wave of composure, obsession, powerful dedication and balls. it's an oscar worthy performance that finds her battling it out with jennifer lawrence come award season.

ZDT will leave you thinking and talking about it long after the screen fades to black. highly recommended (side note: bert macklin is in it!)

the success and enjoyment of most films depends on the palpable chemistry the characters have with and around each other. luckily, in the case of silver linings playbook, all of the major and minor characters interact in such poignant ways that it's almost impossible to take your eyes off of the screen. 

bradley cooper and jennifer lawrence are magic. bring on the academy award nominations & hopefully solid box office receipts - this movie is an impeccable gem and a must see when it opens this thanksgiving.

last week, my crazy cousins and i embarked on a third year of tradition. this year the irvine lake mud run had changed venues and was now at the santa fe dam. despite being a locale we all frequented in our youth, some of us haven't been back since we were single digit ages.

while our team name is too embarrassing to write (it was chosen by my cousin as an early b-day gift, but the rest of us were none too pleased), we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in what had to be the muddiest of all courses. and per usual, despite our varying speeds throughout the four mile trek, we all finished together. ohana bitches!

swim and sleep like a shark.

a movie i've heard a lot about over the past few months was the satirical, dark comedy butter. when i went to the odd life of timothy green junket, jennifer garner talked a little about it, as did ashley green during the apparition's press day. my friend also saw it at a film festival last year and gave it a rave review.

so when an opportunity to catch the movie last week opened up, i jumped at the chance. starring garner, green, olivia wilde, hugh jackman, rob coddroy, alicia silverstone and ty burrell, the film relates the high-stakes and ridiculous world of butter carving in a small iowa town. while hilarious on a few levels, olivia wilde owns as a foul mouthed, tatted-up, bmx riding stripper named brooke.

butter is out in limited release next week.

at 5 in the morning, every breath is a story.

this week me and my favorite giraffe (aka lina fucking chang_) went to see kisses. the duo are my favorite local band and per usual, they put on a hell of a show. against a waving backdrop of palm trees, jesse and zinzi also announced their impending marriage! YAY for wedding bells and good tunes. can't wait to hear the new record.

also present that night was a man named jack daniels and a slew of photobooth pictures. to celebrate the show, the band offered this funky poindexter remix of their latest single. download it below.

in matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.

anna kendrick is pretty much one of my favorite young actresses for a variety of reasons. she's got this winning combination of wit, brains, sweetness and geekiness that comes off very genuine and grounded. at this point i'll pretty much check out any of her movies blindly and trust that her performance alone will be worth any price of admission. on wednesday i took the bester to see pitch perfect at the grove courtesy of ben lyons and hellogiggles. while it was kind of hard for me to believe kendrick as a budding dj (no offense to her, i'm just sick of everyone and their mother's eyebrows claiming such a title), i absolutely fell for the spirit of the film and it's unapologetic sense of fun.

kendrick can really sing and rebel wilson nearly steals the picture as fat amy.

pitch perfect is out now.

i personally am not a big fan of cop movies, but after hearing such awesome things about the new jake gyllenhaal, michael pena and anna kendrick flick, end of watch, my curiosity was in overdrive.

after a free ben lyons' screening on wednesday, i am a full believer of the hype. end of watch was heartwarming, honest, hilarious and left me emotionally connected and concerned. despite bawling my eyes out by the closing credits, i walked out satisfied for the intense journey the film provided. it's got some found footage/hand held action, but don't be discourage as it's minimal. gyllenaal turns in a golden performance, while his chemistry with both pena and kendrick really giving the film it's heart and soul. i can't recommend this movie enough.

watch your six.

old friends, new friends, celebrations, trying to put out fires, whiskey, the metro, once again avoiding the porto potty situation, 2 bottles of hand sanitizer, too many tissues, not eating, not sleeping, dust/dirt, lots of water, hurt feet, sebastian stan sighting, singing happy birthday on the streets of downtown LA, going hard/ham/buck/insert adjective here, chairlift, nite jewel, chromatics, one future island song, tanlines, james blake's 'a case of you', tycho, simian mobile disco, the field, glass candy, yeasayer, gold panda and two of the world's worse-posed pictures ever (gonna post when i find them online). 

to those along for the ride, it was a pleasure and to FYF i salute you and will see you again next year!

this week i was lucky enough to catch a screening of a movie i've been obsessing over for the past month. the rashida jones, andy samberg, elijah wood, ari graynor and emma roberts vehicle, celeste and jesse forever. i've been actively trying to see it since falling in love with the trailer.

they really go out of their way to keep the major conflict out of the marketing (no spoilers here), so it feels like a very intimate reveal for both the main character and the audience when everything changes. admittedly, the movie has a little trouble in the beginning, hitting too many familiar beats. but once it found solid footing, i found it irresistible, relatable and relevant to my age group. rashida jones' performance proved that she's not only capable of leading lady status, but it's a long-over due title. with a handful of cameos (hellllloooo chris pine), what really tips the enjoyment scales is a soundtrack to die for and very recognizable east side-centric locations (silver lake, echo park, larchmont and hollywood just to name a few). 

celeste and jesse forever opens next week in limited release. track it down.

a lot of people need to have a hashtag intervention. taking an ugly, dim lit, blurry or black and white picture of something that looks absolutely nasty isn't saved by adding #foodporn at the end. while i can totally appreciate that not every picture needs to be perfect, the flipside is that every average or greasy meal doesn't need to be shared to your entire social network.

but for those taking angled pictures of their mcdonald's bags or boring empty plates...let me introduce you to real food porn. (no hashtag necessary when it's this amazing).

if it's crowded all the better, cause you know were gonna be up late.

the second to last time i saw lcd soundsystem perform was an emotionally fucked-up day. i found out my aunt had suddenly passed and i debated quitting my job (spoiler alert: i did). when they played, "someone great", i remember fighting a losing battle against tears. that song has always been an all-time favorite and after that night, i still can't hear it without getting a little misty-eyed.

two years later, lcd soundsystem is no longer together. as devastating as it was to hear at the time, they've offered their fans a sense of closure with the stellar documentary shut up and play the hits. it was one hell of a going away present and a perfect ode to my favorite band.

after successfully completing a july 18th one-night-only stand, it's theatrical run has been extended due to popular demand. i highly recommend giving it some attention if you enjoy good music and a coffee-loving, charismatic front-man.
